     Throughout my time of keeping backyard chickens I have discovered 11 simple steps that any new chicken owner should take before building the chicken coop, and here they are...

Step 1: Consider Your Pet Chickens Space

       Keeping chickens in a in a jam-packed sardine-style crowded environment can harm your chickens and can often result in depression and even death. Your chicken coop must be roomy & spacious. You should allot at least 3 square feet for every bird. You’ll also want to allow some space for the feeder and the waterer to go inside your chicken coop.

Step 2: Your Chicken Coops Location

       The number of chickens you are allowed to keep will depend on the location you live in i.e rural or urban. Usually in rural communities, the number of livestock you want can be unlimited but when in urban settings, raising chickens can have restrictions regarding its number.

Step 3: Decide on Your Chicken Breed

       What breed of chicken would you like to raise? If they weigh heavier, this will be an advantage because its weight will make it more difficult for them to fly away, if not a simple wire and post design pen can be used.

       ...however some chicken breeds are prone to flying away, especially if they’re not used to the location, in this case a fence with a higher walls or wires would be more appropriate, which leads me to step 4...

Step 5: Chicken Coop Design

       Building a chicken coop that looks good in your backyard is a must when building your first chicken coop, the last thing you want is a badly designed ugly eye saw in your backyard that doesn’t even do its job properly like many chicken coops out there...

       ...your coop must be designed to not only look good, but to secure your pet chickens from predators, provide them with good shelter and last a long time too, which brings us on to your chicken coops structure...

Step 6: Your Chicken Coops Structure      

       Your coop shouldn’t be too drafty or breezy for the chickens as seasons will change and so will the weather. Cold drafts can affect the chickens comfort and also slow down egg production. Point your chicken coops windows or doors facing south, this way they’ll get most of the warm sun throughout the day.

       Remember to build your chicken coop with a tilted roof to prevent any water leakage inside the coop and allow a lip for the roof so the water can drip off without dampening any of the chicken coops sidewalls

Step 7: Securing Your Pet Chickens From Deadly Predators!

       Predators come in all shapes and sizes, from racoons and badgers to foxes and even rats! Some chicken coops out there are very easy for predators to gain access to and should be avoided at all costs.

       Building a chicken coop that protects your pet chickens from danger is the most crucial part of raising backyard chickens. Features such as the ability to lock the hens in at night and a solid floor or wire mesh in the ground to prevent any predators digging under the coop are very important factors in your chickens security

Step 9: Nest Boxes

       You'll need to put nest boxes to encourage egg laying. One nest box is equivalent to three or four chickens. Situate the boxes inches above the ground. Do not let it touch the soil. Its good to place the nesting boxes somewhere private where no one can bother them while they’re doing their thing however keep in mind accessibility...

Step 10:  Easy Accessibility
